[dv-specials condition= "tundra" ]
With the Toyota Tundra, you can do just about anything and go just about anywhere while enjoying the durability of this full-size pickup truck. The Tundra is a vehicle that you can count on, as more than 90 percent of models sold within the last 15 years are still on the road today.
The 2016 model received honors from KBB.com for its resale value and from Edmunds.com for its retained value, giving you added confidence in your investment. People who plan on taking their Tundra off-road regularly should consider the TRD Pro trim with its TRD-tuned suspension, 5.7-liter V8, TRD Pro Bilstein shocks, and 1/4-inch aluminum skid plate.
No matter which V8 engine you choose for your Tundra, you will be ready to tow and haul with up to 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. The Tundra was designed for towing and hauling over 10,500 pounds thanks to features like an integrated towing hitch receiver and a combination meter. In addition to being built tough, the Tundra is comfortable with a spacious CrewMax cabin that has room for the whole family or even six adults on your work force.
Toyota has introduced two new variations to the Tundra’s trim range for 2021. The first new arrival is the darkly appointed Nightshade Edition, which comes in a shadowy spectrum of light and dark exterior paint colors. It also sports blacked-out accents across its exterior, while on the inside, you’ll find black leather upholstery. The Trail Special Edition is based on the Tundra’s SR5 model in a spacious Crew Cab build, and it adds to that trim’s offerings with distinctive badging, plus 18-inch wheels, all-weather floor mats, a lockable storage unit, a color-matching grille, and back-and-tan upholstery.
The Toyota Tundra has a long history, going all the way back to 1993 with the T100 and its 3-liter V6 engine. A 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine was added to the T100 in 1994 and an automatic transmission became available on 4-wheel drive models the same year. This is also when extra safety features were added to the list of standard options, including a driver-side airbag. For the 1995 model year, Toyota added a Xtracab model to the Tundra and swapped out the 3-liter V6 powertrain with a 3.4-liter V6.
The Toyota Tundra officially arrived as a 2000 model year in the summer of 1999, winning numerous awards that same year. In 2003, Toyota slightly revised the styling of the Tundra and added a new Access Cab SideStep model with a V8. The Tundra Double Cab was added the following year. In 2005, the engines were updated, including a 245-horsepower 4-liter V6 that replaced the 3.4-liter V6. In addition, the V8 got VVT-I that improved output to 282 horsepower.
A new generation arrived in 2007 that was capable of towing over 10,000 pounds, followed again by receiving numerous awards. This impressive rating was the result of the new 5.7-liter V8 with 381 horsepower. The Double Cab replaced the Access Cab from the first generation and the CrewMax Cab was introduced as a replacement to the previous generation’s Double Cab.
There were also new bed length options, which increased customization. Toyota made sure the second-generation worked better for construction workers by including extra-large door handles, headrests large enough for hard hats, an integrated tow hitch, and a deck rail system.
