It Had a Resurgence in the 1840s
It’s hard to imagine a world without “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” These days, people often refer to it as one of Shakespeare’s most popular and well-known plays. That wasn’t always the case, though. When the Restoration era began in 1660, the play suffered some serious neglect. Full performances came to a halt and didn’t start again until the 1840s. Of course, it’s been going strong ever since.
The Fairies Are Part of Space
When Shakespeare wrote “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in 1595 or 1596, Uranus had yet to be discovered. William Herschel discovered the planet and its two moons almost 200 years later, and he had the honor of naming them. He actually named the moons after the fairy queen and king from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Now, the fairies aren’t just popular in the play. They are popular in space too. Pretty cool, huh?
The Title Might Be All Wrong
There’s been some debate over whether the title was actually meant to be “The Dream of a Midsummer Night.” There is some speculation that the play is actually set in May, and the characters are dreaming of midsummer. When you watch it, see what you think. Do you think the current title is the right one, or did something get lost in translation?

The Beatles Famously Played the “Rude Mechanicals”
The “Around the Beatles” TV special had a little bit of everything, including the Fab Four’s portrayal of the “Rude Mechanicals” from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The Beatles obviously had fun with it, but Ringo Starr stole the show. His deadpan version of Lion was a huge hit.
