From Barn to Brewery: Preservation of Historic Thomasson Barn
The historical landmark barn – known as Thomasson Barn – which is located on Hornbaker Road ?at the intersection of Routes 28 and 234, is soon going to become a brewery. The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently sold the barn and six surrounding acres to Silva Holding Company for $1 million.
What Will the New Brewery Include?
Under the sale agreement, Silva Holdings will restore the historical barn and build an $8-million “brewery campus,” which will house a packaging facility, a bistro and tasting room, a company retail store, a beer garden to grow hops and seasonal produce to flavor the beers, walking trails and indoor bocce courts. The brewery will operate under the name 2 Silos Brewing Company and will employ more than 100 people to make craft beer.
Project Phases
The first phase of the project will be renovation of the barn, which will include the tasting room along with the indoor bocce courts, an arts and entertainment space, and a private dining room in the lower level barrel aging area.
Subsequent phases will include the new construction of a 9,000-square-foot building to be used for brewing operations, which include the brew house, fermenters, cold storage and packaging equipment. Another planned 1,200-square-foot building will house the company store with a roof-top patio area overlooking the 2 Silos garden. An outdoor beer garden with outdoor seating and a stone fireplace will follow. According to a Silva Holding Company press release, the renovation will be complete by 2016.
