Autism Speaks 5k
Close your eyes and picture your typical July day. There’s probably water nearby, some sort of grilled meat or vegetable, and most importantly the events of the day are taking place outside. Imagine if you could put a twist on that scene by throwing a 5k into the mix. Well you can, by participating in the inaugural Autism Speaks 5k in Fairfax!
Did you know that autism impacts 1 in 59 children in the United States, and Worldwide it’s 70 million? It’s time to make a change by participating in the fundraiser. This event, which takes place on Saturday, July 13, is a timed 5k and family-friendly walk in Fairfax County and around the Government Center area. No matter your age or physical ability, anyone and everyone is encouraged to participate.
Aside from the money that the event will raise, participants also form teams and raise money ahead of time. That money is then used for research and providing support for people with autism and their families. If you aren’t necessarily a runner but still want to help out, there is a virtual 5k option as well, so you can offer a helping hand without having to use your feet.
What To Know Ahead Of Time
Participants should show up on July 13 to the Fairfax County Government Center. The race begins at 9 a.m., but packets can be picked up as early as 7:30 a.m. Be sure to get there early if you’re waiting to pick yours up! Shirts and medals will be provided for all participants.
What To Bring
Sunscreen and sunglasses are a must. It’s hot and you might be sweaty, but remember to come prepared to fight sun damage. Also, an extra change of clothes will be helpful if you’re planning to stay after the race for the Autism Speaks Safety Fair, where you can learn more information, find resources, and receive a Safety Kit.
